Cover Reveal - Inspire by Cora Carmack

25 Sept 2014
I LOVE Cora Carmack and I am also a fan of NA Paranormal novels so I am very excited for this book. The cover is also incredibly beautiful so I am very happy to be sharing it today.

Synopsis

To inspire.

As an immortal muse, she doesn’t have any other choice. It’s part of how she was made. Musicians, artists, actors—they use her to advance their art, and she uses them to survive. She moves from one artist to the next, never staying long enough to get attached. But all she wants is a different life— a normal one. She’s spent thousands of years living lie after lie, and now she’s ready for something real.
Sweet, sexy, and steady, Wilder Bell feels more real than anything else in her long existence. And most importantly… he’s not an artist. He doesn’t want her for her ability. But she can’t turn off the way she influences people, not even to save a man she might love. Because in small doses, she can help make something beautiful, but her ability has just as much capacity to destroy as it does to create. The longer she stays, the more obsessed Wilder will become. It’s happened before, and it never turns out well for the mortal.

Her presence may inspire genius.

But it breeds madness, too.

Review

The synopsis fails to mention the key conflict in this book which is a love triangle.  I know there are a lot of people out there who groan at the mention of a love triangle but this was not your typical one.  The love triangle revolves around the hero of the story rather than the heroine and the author painfully conveys the struggle of developing feelings for someone while still being in love and in a relationship with someone else.  The girlfriend is not some catty wench that doesn't deserve the hero.  In fact, she is a charming, sympathetic character whose inner strength is nothing short of remarkable.

This is not a story about cheating, for the most part, as the heroine has personal experience with cheating and refuses to be that type of person.  There are some lines that are crossed but not in a manner where you would lose respect for either of the characters.  The characters are pretty close to saintly, considering the circumstances, but it doesn't mean that mistakes aren't made and that there are no painful ramifications associated with those mistakes.

This is a very memorable story as there are a lot of elements that are unique.  As song writing is a key component of the book, it is awesome that the author collaborated with a musician to have songs recorded.  Song lyrics don't always translate to writing the same way as when they are sung so the soundtrack really brings them to life.  And... they don't suck.  The title track has been stuck in my head for days as the chorus is both emotionally moving and catchy.

Introducing NA Paranormal Month

15 Sept 2014
As you know I am a loud and proud supporter of the NA category and I love to support everything it has to offer. Contemporary romance novels completely dominate NA and have for a while now but MY personal favourites are the paranormal novels. To help support these amazing books and the authors that write them I have decided to run a NA Paranormal Month throughout November here on Bookish Treasures. I hope to fill the month with lots of reviews, author interviews, guest posts, excerpts and more as well as a few individual giveaways and a huge bumper giveaway.

If you are an author of NA paranormal novels interested in participating please let me know as soon as possible as going off past events I have ran I am expecting spots to fill up fast. It will be roughly first come first serve but not entirely as I want a good mix of known and as yet unknown authors as well as a variety of books and post types. You need to have at least one NA paranormal book either currently available or releasing within a few months.

We are probably going to have a post a day as well as lots of fun stuff happening on facebook. We cant wait for November and hope you feel the same!

Mini Reviews - Slide, Kiya: Hope Of The Pharoah, Yours To Uncover

11 Sept 2014
Mini reviews are a new little thing here at Bookish Treasures. You see, sometimes it is hard to find a lot to say about a book. Maybe it is hard to write a long review without including spoilers or maybe the book didn't really inspire us and we don't have much to say. Sometimes it might even be that for whatever reason we were unable to write a review after finishing the book and though we can still remember our feelings for the book easily, we can't remember the details clearly enough for a long review. Or maybe it is just a very short book so there isn't much to talk about! Whatever the reason, we still want to share our thoughts on these books with you so expect the occasional bunch of mini-reviews!

Slide synopsis

This book drew me in right away with the heroine’s emotional plight.  Evangeline is basically shipped off to her grandparents following a profound tragedy and has now been recalled to her former life.  She is exceedingly wealthy but she doesn’t come across as spoiled.  In fact, she is quite relatable.  She is not a blushing virgin or a complete commitment-phobe like some characters.  She is real, with a real sexual appetite and real insecurities and yet is remarkably pragmatic about things.  The hero, Ryan, is portrayed as the typical, sexy womanizer who finds himself intrigued but it works.  His transformation is gradual and his reasons for emotional distance are clearly explained.  This isn’t a case of instalove where the hero sudden turns into a stalker.  Sure, he makes one hell of an effort but it doesn’t come across as creepy or implausible.

I can’t say I was thrilled with the direction things took as I am not a huge fan of women hiding certain things but I can’t argue much with a happy ending and I enjoyed the emotional ups and downs the book took to reach it.

Kiya: Hope Of The Pharoah synopsis

This is such a unique, individual and special New Adult book. It is set in ancient Egypt and follows Kiya, an 18 year old girl who becomes one of the Pharoah's many wives. This book certainly isn't your typical romance though it does have some romance in it. Kiya loves her husband in a way though it is more respect, friendship and the desire to do right by him than true romantic love.

I loved that there was so much to the story and all of the characters have depth. This book has such an epic feel and promises great things from the rest of the series.

This book held a lot of potential but it was just much too rushed - and no I'm not talking about the actual length of the book. This book has insta-love to the extreme, think having sex after sharing pretty much nothing more than a sentence or two, declaring eternal love close to immediately after and then trying to get married all in the span of a day or two.

The synopsis made it seem like this book would be so much more exciting but it was a little bit of a let down. This is not one of the better Sci-Fi Romances I have read.

Waiting On Wednesday - King Tomb by Scarlett Dawn

10 Sept 2014
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that allows readers to share the books that they are most looking forwards to reading.

This week the book I have chosen to feature is King Tomb by Scarlett Dawn, book 3 in the Forever Evermore series.

**Spoilers - Be warned that this is the conclusion to a series and the synopsis does include some slight spoilers**

You can read my review of book 1 here - Review of King Hall

Title: King Tomb

Author: Scarlett Dawn

Series: Forever Evermore #3

Publisher: Escape Publishing

Publication Date: 8th October

Links: Goodreads | Amazon | Amazon UK

Synopsis

From Scarlett Dawn comes the stunning, sexy, sensual, surprising, spell-binding conclusion to the best-selling first Forever Evermore trilogy.

Queen Shifter, Lily Ruckler, has found solace in brutal warfare. Her bloodied fists and bared fangs fill the holes left in her memory, the blank spaces that leave her soul aching and empty. Her only pleasure is in blood; her only salvation is the relationship she has with her infant child, the baby of unknown origins who brings her solace and stability.

When Elder Harcourt summons Lily and her protector Antonio back to the United States, Lily thinks nothing unusual about the change of location. But a standard reconnaissance mission leaves her trapped inside King Zeller’s private quarters, and at his mercy. Surprise attraction rapidly turns to a battle of wills and an intense power struggle that leaves no clear victor but plenty of resentment.

They are not allowed to nurse their wounds. In order to win the war against the Commoners, the King Vampire and Queen Shifter must work together. It should be easy. The war is turning, the battle is deadly, and both Lily and Ezra love the cold cleanliness of combat. But their chance meeting has led to more than an unlikely alliance. Secrets have a way of surfacing, especially on a torn-up battlefield, and Lily and Ezra are about to re-learn all they cannot remember. If they can’t control their emotions and responses, it will be to their own ruin and the destruction of everything around them.

My Thoughts

This series is definitely right at the top of my favourites for NA Fantasy Romance and due to the somewhat dramatic ending to book 2 I have been desperate for this book since last year. Luckily it releases reasonably soon so I don't have much longer to wait :)

3) Falling head over heels for your winged hero.

Review

This is a second chance love story featuring a sweet heroine and her loyal friends and family. The hero is also as drool-worthy as one would expect from the author.

There are several things that I loved about this story. The first is that there isn't a whole lot of time spent wallowing in the characters' misery. The emotion is adequately conveyed in glimpses throughout the story when pertinent. When I read, I want to experience the full range of emotions but I don't want to be depressed, so I appreciate books that balance that well. The second is that I truly loved the supportive friends and family. They weren't able to magically fix anything but they were fiercely loyal.

The only things that I struggled with in this book were the promiscuity of the hero prior to their reunion and the sheer volume of crap upended on the heroine by scheming individual(s). On the first item, I have to say that while this upsets me, I prefer it to the unrealistic fairy tale of a wounded celibate male. As for the second item, the scheming is the predominant conflict in the book, so it is what it is. The key is that she is never really forced to deal with any of it entirely on her own.

This is a great standalone book that covers the full spectrum of emotions and includes the steam factor we've come to expect from this author. I look forward to reading more of her work.

*A copy of this book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review*
